Privacy policy
Last updated 29 October 2026. Draft for review by counsel before launch.
We keep what the app needs to work, and nothing about where you are.
What we collect
- Account. Your email address, a password (stored by Amazon Cognito, never by us in plain text) and your date of birth, which we use once to check you are 21 or older. We keep the date of birth as an account attribute and nothing else about you.
- What you add. Your handle and display name, the bottles on your shelf, the pours you log (rating, serve, size, tasting notes, your own words, free text), the people you follow, cheers and comments, the bottles you hunt, recipes you share, and sightings you report.
- Device. If you turn alerts on, a push token for your phone so we can send notifications. The theme you pick stays on your device.
Location
- Fingerwell asks for your location only while you are using the app, and only when a screen needs it: to list stores near you, to show sightings near you, and to check that you are at a store when you report or confirm a sighting.
- Your position is never stored. A sighting is tied to a store, not to you. When you report one, the app sends your position once so the server can mark the sighting "verified" if you are within 200 metres of the store; the position is discarded after that check.
- For alerts, you may set a home area. We store it as a cell about 20 kilometres across, never as a point, and you can clear it at any time on the You tab.
What other people see
Your handle, display name, your pours (with the bottle's level after each pour), your comments and cheers, the recipes you share and the sightings you report are visible to other signed-in users. Your email address, date of birth and home area are not.
What we do not do
- We do not sell or share your data with advertisers or data brokers.
- We do not track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not reward how much you drink. Badges count range: distilleries, styles, notes, sightings.
- We do not offer any way to buy or sell whiskey between people.
Where it lives
Fingerwell runs on Amazon Web Services in the United States (Cognito for sign-in, DynamoDB and S3 for data, Lambda for the API). Push notifications go through Expo's push service to Apple and Google. OpenStreetMap supplies the store list.
Your choices
- Export. You tab → Your data → Export my data gives you a JSON file of everything stored under your account.
- Delete. You tab → Your data → Delete my account removes your account, shelf, pours, hunt list and follows for good. Comments you left on other people's pours keep the handle you had at the time, with no link back to you. There is no undo.
- Location and notifications are controlled in your phone's settings.
Age
Fingerwell is for adults of legal drinking age only. We require a date of birth showing 21 years or older at sign-up and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone younger.
Changes and contact
We will post changes here with a new date. Questions: support.
